Are your boards food safe?

All of our charcuterie boards are prepared food safe. I finish the boards with food safe mineral oil and food safe wax. If the finish is a table top epoxy for the gloss finish, the board is still food safe once it fully cures and does not need mineral oil or wax. Larger pieces that are finished with Osmo Finish are not food safe and should not be used for serving food. Osmo finish is meant for wall art, tables and desks.

Are these boards microwave safe?

No, these boards are not meant to be used in a microwave, oven, toaster oven or dishwashers. Doing so can risk damage to the boards or damage to your appliances.

How long does it take to receive a board once ordered?

Each board is custom made and depends on the design, thickness and finish of the board. Creating the board and cure time of the epoxy can take up to 2 weeks from starting the process. For boards finished with mineral oil and wax, we can generally ship within three to four weeks of ordering. If the board requires a tabletop epoxy finish, we need to allow the final coat to cure for an additional 2 weeks before shipping to keep from getting any marks in the finish during shipping. If the table is finished with Osmo finish, we will need an additional 2 weeks for the finish to fully cure before shipping. All shipping estimates will be given during the design process with the customer.

Can I have things added into the epoxy of the board?

Yes, depending on the size of the item and thickness of the board. Some boards have been made with river rock and leaves in the middle of the epoxy to add to the design. We can also imbed challenge coins and military coins in the board as retirement gifts. Since all our boards are custom designed, we work very closely with the client to create a board they will love and cherish.

How do you clean and care for the boards?

These boards are not dishwasher safe. Washing the boards in a dishwasher will risk warping and cracking or delamination of the epoxy.

Before you apply any oils or waxes to your board, make sure it’s clean. Wash it with soap and water and allow to air dry or wipe dry.

Using a soft, lint-free cloth (e.g. a microfiber towel, an old t-shirt), dip into the oil and apply or pour a small amount onto the surface and buff the oil into the wood. Continue to apply and buff in until the wood is no longer absorbing the product. Wipe off excess.

If you would like, you can also finish the wood with a wax product for added protection. There are also mixed oil-wax products, that streamlines the two steps. Apply the wax in a similar fashion, wipe off excess, and allow the board to dry. I use Walrus oil and Walrus wax Follow this link for more information (https://walrusoil.com/)

Approximately 2% of the general population is allergic to wood dust and the compounds found in wood.— AllergyTreatmentandSymptoms.com

We verified that a very small percentage of people have experienced an allergic reaction due to nut allergies from the some woods like Walnut. At this time, Bells WoodCraft hasn’t experienced the result of allergic reactions in any of our wood or epoxy boards, but recommends for anyone who may be sensitive to wood, to be especially careful when choosing those particular products.

The allergic reaction
The symptoms can vary among patients but generally, the allergic reaction to wood resembles contact dermatitis with some redness, swelling, blisters and irritation. In severe allergic reactions, some could experience anaphylaxis. Generally the allergic reaction appears after 24/48 hours of prolonged contact, and in few cases doesn’t disappear when you stop using the serving board, or may even get worse for a few days after. We recommend that you see an allergist as soon as you notice a rash or irritation.

Consult your Doctor
If you think you are sensitive to wood, consult your doctor or an allergist. Physical evaluation, a medical history, and patch tests will help in finding the cause and rule out other disorders. The treatment will be mainly symptomatic as with other allergies. Antiallergy medications may be prescribed. If the reaction is mostly dermatologic, topical corticosteroids may be given (with prescription). Doctors should be informed that Bells WoodCraft may use titebond III wood glue in cutting boards and epoxy in river boards but doesn’t treat the wood with any artificial chemicals. Only food safe mineral oil and wax.
